horse racing events at lavacha

SURAT: Far from the madding crowd of the Diamond City, the horse lovers from across Gujarat and neighbouring Rajasthan and Maharashtra will descend on the serene Lavacha village near Dandi in Olpaad taluka, some 20 km from the city, to witness and participate in the first ever horse race on February 1.

City-based Pavan Group, an association of the horse-keepers, has organized a range of horse races including single foot race (ravaal chaal), gallop and race for jockeys under 19 years of age.

Around 150 horses Kathiawari, Sindhi and Marwari breeds from places like Rajasthan, Kutch, Navsari, Bharuch, Surat, Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Valsad and districts from Maharashtra will participate in the event.

Founder member of Pavan Group, Piyush Patel who will participate with his four horses of Sindhi and Kathiawari breeds said, "Besides the racing event, a fair has also been organized for horse lovers to choose and buy quality breeds."

Ismail Patel, another member of the group said, "We have specially prepared a kutcha road in order to avoid accidents. Earlier, we used to hold horse races on tar roads where the horses skid easily injuring the jockeys."
